Knoxville School Shooting Leaves One Person Dead, Police Officer Injured

One person was killed and a police officer was injured in a shooting at a high school in Knoxville, Tenn., police said.

Knoxville police said officers responded to a report of a male who was possibly armed at Austin-East Magnet High School on Monday afternoon. One officer was shot at least once during a confrontation with the suspect, police said in a news release. The officer was taken to a hospital for injuries that weren’t expected to be life-threatening.

One male was pronounced dead at the scene, and another male was detained for further investigation, according to police. No other details were given. Police said there weren’t any other known gunshot victims.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents responded to the shooting and the agency will lead the investigation, which is common for officer-involved shootings, according to police.

The school building had been secured, and students who weren’t involved in the incident were released to their families, Bob Thomas, superintendent of Knox County Schools, said on Twitter. Police said a reunification site had been set up at a baseball field behind the school.

The officer who was shot survived was conscious and in good spirits, Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon told reporters.

Monday’s shooting was the latest in a spate of teen violence in Knoxville this year. In February, two Austin-East students, 16-year-old Stanley Freeman Jr. and Janaria Muhammad, 15, were fatally shot, prompting the Federal Bureau of Investigation to offer a reward of up to $5,000 for information, according to a city of Knoxville press release.

Last month, Knoxville police charged two boys, 14 and 16, with murder in Stanley Freeman’s killing, a city news release said. Police allege that the two fired multiple shots at his car as he left school on a Friday afternoon.
