J\u00f6rg Carstensen\/Getty Images<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>After a lawsuit alleged Subway tuna isn&#8217;t actually tuna, the New York Times did its own analysis.<\/li><li>The newspaper used a commercial lab to analyze tuna samples bought in Los Angeles.<\/li><li>The sandwich chain has dismissed claims its tuna isn&#8217;t 100% authentic and has called the lawsuit meritless.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, Subway\u00a0got hit with a lawsuit alleging its tuna\u00a0is not actually tuna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country&#8217;s biggest sandwich chain\u00a0called the lawsuit meritless and maintains it buys only skipjack and yellowfin tuna from fisheries with stocks that aren&#8217;t overfished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeking to get to the bottom of the mystery, the New York Times on Sunday\u00a0published a report\u00a0with results of a commercial lab analysis of &#8220;60 inches worth of Subway tuna sandwiches&#8221; purchased from three different locations in Los Angeles. The tuna meat was removed, froze, and shipped for testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results: &#8220;No amplifiable tuna DNA was present in the sample and so we obtained no amplification products from the DNA,&#8221; the email read. &#8220;Therefore, we cannot identify the species.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for the lab told the Times that the results pointed to two possible scenarios. &#8220;One, it&#8217;s so heavily processed that whatever we could pull out, we couldn&#8217;t make an identification. Also check out This Behind-the-Scenes Secret at Chick-fil-A Is Stunning Customers.\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tuna experts also emphasized to the Times that once fish like tuna has been cooked, its protein becomes broken down, or denatured, making it extremely difficult to identify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newspaper also notes that it&#8217;s not the first to try and uncover whether Subway&#8217;s popular tuna sandwich do indeed contain all tuna.\u00a0Inside Edition did its own investigation in New York\u00a0and found the tuna purchased in the sandwiches was in fact tuna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meantime, Subway continues to fight a class-action complaint filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California alleging it makes false claims about its tuna meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawsuit alleges &#8220;independent testing repeatedly affirmed&#8221; Subway makes the tuna product with no actual tuna fish, but it did not name the agencies that conducted such tests. The suit also claims Subway profits off mislabeling the tuna products by using cheaper ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway\u00a0has dismissed the claims as baseless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These claims are meritless,&#8221; a Subway spokesperson said in a statement to Insider in January. &#8220;Tuna is one of our most popular sandwiches.
