{"id":1522,"date":"2021-04-16T16:28:29","date_gmt":"2021-04-16T21:28:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.webfxonline.com\/?p=1522"},"modified":"2021-05-07T15:33:35","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T20:33:35","slug":"gunman-in-indianapolis-kills-8-people-at-fedex-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.webfxonline.com\/?p=1522","title":{"rendered":"Gunman in Indianapolis Kills 8 People at FedEx Facility"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"720\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1280 \/ 720;\" width=\"1280\" autoplay controls src=\"https:\/\/www.webfxonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Desktopavc_FedEx-shooting-Police-ID-killer-in-rampage-as-19-year-old-man.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>INDIANAPOLIS \u2014 A former employee whose mother had warned law enforcement officials last year that he might try to commit \u201csuicide by cop\u201d stormed a FedEx facility in Indianapolis late Thursday, fatally shooting eight people and injuring at least seven others<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a man wearing a blue shirt\" src=\"https:\/\/img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net\/tenant\/amp\/entityid\/BB1fJkGN.img?h=450&amp;w=799&amp;m=6&amp;q=60&amp;o=f&amp;l=f&amp;x=727&amp;y=459\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The violence gave way to a day of grief and suspense, as families waited hours for answers about missing loved ones and reports emerged that the gunman was a former employee at the facility, which also has a large number of Sikh employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, Paul Keenan, special agent in charge of the F.B.I. field office in Indianapolis, said the gunman had been interviewed by agents in April of last year. \u201cThe suspect\u2019s mother contacted law enforcement to report he might try to commit \u2018suicide by cop,\u2019\u201d Mr. Keenan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police department put the suspect on an \u201cimmediate detention mental health temporary hold,\u201d he said, and items in the suspect\u2019s bedroom prompted the agency\u2019s involvement. \u201cNo criminal violation was found,\u201d Mr. Keenan said. \u201cThe shotgun was not returned to the suspect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A law enforcement source identified the suspect as 19-year-old Brandon Scott Hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Families of FedEx employees spent much of Friday in a painful limbo while the authorities combed through the crime scene and began the painstaking process of identifying victims and informing their loved ones. By early afternoon, bodies had begun to be removed from the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesman for FedEx confirmed that \u201cthe perpetrator was a former employee at the facility,\u201d but few other details had emerged about the background of the suspect, who officials believed was armed with a rifle and killed himself almost immediately after the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authorities said he arrived at the facility and started shooting abruptly in the parking lot, without an immediate confrontation. \u201cHe just appeared to randomly start shooting,\u201d said Deputy Chief Craig McCartt of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An employee at the facility said 11 p.m., around when the shooting occurred, is a time when employees typically take a break, and many relax in the parking lot. \u201cMost go to their cars to listen to music, smoke a cigarette, eat some food,\u201d said the employee, D.J. Boyles, 23, who said he has worked as a package handler there for almost five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The violence in Indianapolis comes only weeks after back-to-back mass shootings last month at&nbsp;spas in the Atlanta area&nbsp;and at a&nbsp;grocery store in Boulder, Colo., renewing pressure on Washington to address America\u2019s deep-seated problems with gun violence and evoking both exhaustion and grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials used a common word \u2014 \u201canother\u201d \u2014 to define the tragedy. \u201cThis is another heartbreaking day, and I\u2019m shaken by the mass shooting at the FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis,\u201d Gov. Eric Holcomb of Indiana&nbsp;said on Twitter. Mayor Joe Hogsett of Indianapolis condemned the \u201chorrific news of yet another mass shooting, an act of violence that senselessly claimed the lives of eight of our neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement from the White House, where he ordered the flag lowered to half-staff, President Biden called the shooting \u201cjust the latest in a string of tragedies, following closely after gunmen firing bullets in broad daylight at spas in and around Atlanta, Ga., a grocery store in Boulder, Colo., a home in Rock Hill, S.C., and so many other shootings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGun violence is an epidemic in America,\u201d Mr. Biden added, calling on Congress to approve gun control legislation. \u201cWe should not accept it. We must act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F.B.I. investigators helped local law enforcement officials search a home in Indianapolis associated with the suspect on Friday, said Chris Bavender, a spokeswoman for the F.B.I. office in Indianapolis. Officials seized evidence that included desktop computers and other electronic media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FedEx sorting facility where the shooting occurred is on the city\u2019s southwest side, near the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Randal Taylor of the Indianapolis police said he had been told that the facility was staffed by a large number of Sikh employees. The executive director of the Sikh Coalition, Satjeet Kaur, said in a news release that \u201cSikh community members are among those injured and killed by the gunman in Indianapolis last night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even as authorities promised a meticulous investigation, Mayor Hogsett said no further information could \u201crestore the lives that are taken, or the peace that was shattered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The atmosphere was fraught at a nearby hotel as families of workers at the facility waited for word about loved ones, many of whom were not allowed to have their cellphones at work, complicating the effort. The number of families waiting dwindled as the day went on, and the mayor visited with those remaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One woman, who arrived at the hotel early Friday morning, cried, \u201cThank you, Jesus! Thank you, Lord!\u201d when she found out her family member was safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police said early Friday that five of the injured people had been hospitalized with gunshot or shrapnel wounds, including one in critical condition who was expected to survive.
